Call the Ambulance, Week 8 hurt!
Week 8 of the NFL had a little bit of everything. A few defensive battles, a shoot-out at record pace and a couple overtime thrillers. What week 8 had in abundance was injuries, bad injuries. Some major names with down and major injuries happened it what seemed like every game this weekend. As if this NFL season wasn’t already shaped enough with injuries with fantasy studs the likes of Jordy Nelson and Arian Foster already out for the season. This week was BRUTAL and will have a huge impact on the rest of the season.
Steve Smith Sr.: Torn Achilles, out for the season. This may end Steve Smith’s career, although latest reports are that he may reconsider his choice to retire after this season. For someone his age that will be an uphill battle if he does decide to come back for one more year. We will hope for the best because Steve Smith is one of a kind and if anyone can battle back from this at his age it would be smith.
Fantasy Impact: Smith was putting up good numbers and was clearly Joe Flacco’s favorite target, in his absence guys like Kamar Aiken, Marlon Brown, and Crocket Gilmore should be getting more involved.
Joe Haden: Concussion, after just coming back from missing games with a concussion Haden didn’t even play the full game until he got another. No time table for his return and being his 2nd concussion this season it doesn’t look good.
Fantasy Impact: While Haden has missed a lot of time already and doesn’t play on offense he will have an impact on games since he generally shadows the other team’s best receiver.
Josh McCown: Has become the walking wounded as of late. He went into Sundays game already hurt, and watching him in the pocket Sunday was painful. Seemed like every time he dropped back he either took a sack or got rid of the ball just before he got destroyed by any one of the Cardinals defenders. While there is no points for being tough we have to give him credit for being able to continuously get up and stay in the game. He took a hard shot at one point which looked like it led to broken ribs. He refused to leave the game or comment on the X-rays after the game so his status is uncertain for Thursdays night game.
Fantasy Impact: If McCown is out, Johnny Manziel may re-appear in the fantasy world, which might help his close friend Travis Benjamin start producing again. Gary Barnidge is still a viable option but his production will probably drop either way with Manziel or and injured McCown.
Kendall Wright: Sprained MCL, still waiting on more testing but should miss a couple a weeks.
Fantasy Impact: Wright has been very quiet for 5 weeks so this won’t change too much.
Le’Veon Bell: Devastating turn of events for him and the Pittsburgh Steelers. As soon as they got healthy and all of their starters on the field, Le’Veon suffered one of the most horrific knee injuries we have seen I a long time. He will be out for the season and we hope he can recover for next year. It is hard to see one of the leagues bright young stars suffer such a bad injury.
Fantasy Impact: DeAngelo Williams will be his replacement and should be a solid player like he was the first couple games this season.
Matt Forte: Was carted off the field Sunday for a knee injury. He was lucky enough to avoid an ACL injury but his MCL is very much in question. More test to come but his status for week 9 is doubtful.
Fantasy Impact: Rookie running back Jeremy Langford should step in for Forte until he can return.
Ryan Fitzpatrick: Has an MRI scheduled to checkout his thumb but early reports are a torn ligament. This should put him out for some time, and Geno Smith didn’t survive long as his replacement so the New York Jets have a QB situation on their hands.
Fantasy Impact: With no QB, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker who are both having solid seasons will probably struggle until Fitzpatrick comes back.
Ricardo Lockette: Scariest moment of the week. If you have a light stomach do not watch this. Lockette got hit hard, went limp and then was taken off the field on a stretcher. He was diagnosed with a concussion and ligament damage in his neck.
Fantasy Impact: Lockette was emerging as a young playmaker for the Seahawks. With him out, Doug Baldwin and Jimmy Graham will have to get more involved in the deep passing game.
Khiry Robinson: Carted off with a broken leg.
Fantasy Impact: Robinson was having a solid season working behind Ingram. With him out CJ Spiller should be getting more involved in the offense.
Reggie Bush: Not a big surprise here. Honestly at this point we should be more surprised if Bush wasn’t on the injury report this far into a season. After running into the wall against the Rams Bush left the game.
Fantasy Impact: Bush wasn’t really making much of an impact on the field so not much should change for the 49ers.
