NFL Week 1 Preseason Breakdown (Thursday)

It's finally that time of year again! A few quick notes before we get started...

  • There 100% is an edge in NFL preseason DFS if you take the time to research and keep up on the late breaking inactives, these articles will be a guide to constructing your rosters and i will update them to the best of my ability. Remember to check back a half hour before lock to assure i haven't made a key update!

  • Lots of questions coming in about what you are looking for in players etc. Obviously volume is king here in preseason but you also need to know exactly how to judge the volume. One whole half of a guy playing with fourth stringers is not going to be as good as a guy playing a quarter with second stringers IN MOST CASES. It's really slate dependent and early on in the preseason the edge is incredible due to the amount of guys playing that the average fans have literally never heard of.

  • Scoring in Preseason DFS is WAY SOFTER than regular season. You are literally hunting for 2-3x from your players and it will be extremely low scoring.

With that being said let's get on with the show! Keep in mind the options listed below are NOT in order, I'm just highlighting the plays that I am on the most

Quarterback:

Brett Hundley- Yes, yes, yes! After missing last preseason with a high ankle sprain the former preseason GOAT will finally return to the field tonight against the Eagles. He should get close to a half of work and has actual good receivers to throw to in Allison and Janis. He should be popular along with Jimmy G but he's one of the top plays at the position tonight and has big time upside.

Case Keenum- Keenum lines up as one of the best plays on a loaded QB position tonight. He should see a half (maybe even more) of run and will have Michael Floyd running routes for him. This is a guy that we know can sling the ball and will shred backups.

Jimmy Garrappolo/Jacoby Brissett- Both of these guys are in play but Garrappolo will probably be the highest owned QB (or close) on the slate. The Pats only have three QB's and we can obviously rule out Brady so that leaves G and Jacoby Football to soak up the whole game. My one concern is that they won't want to risk Jimmy that much so they end up giving him one quarter and Brissett closer to three. Garrappolo is one of the top plays tonight and if we get news about Brissett playing more than 2 quarters he becomes an option.

Colt McCoy- A perennial preseason factor McCoy should get plenty of run against the Ravens. He threw 17 passes in week one of the preseason last year and we can probably expect around the same for him this time out. My one issue is I'm finding it hard to find a viable stack candidate with him but he's in consideration tonight, especially if you're running a bunch of teams.

Running Back:

Terron Ward/Brian Hill- These two guys are going to soak up pretty much all of the ATL carries tonight and are the top two options on the slate for me. Getting 7-10 carries with upside for more is absolutely HUGE tonight and both of these guys have that in their range of outcomes. Ward is a former preseason stud and Brian Hill is a SPARQ athlete that's been getting tons of buzz in camp. I think Hill would be more likely for a TD because if they are on the goal line I think he gets the ball but I love both of these guys and would even play them together on the same lineup.

De'Angelo Henderson- Henderson is lining up as an elite play tonight based off workload alone. Jamaal Charles is out, Devontae Booker is hurt and there's not point in risking CJ Anderson in week one of the preseason. That basically leaves Henderson and Juwan Thompson to soak up all the carries and that's exactly the type of situation we are looking for in preseason DFS. Thompson is more of a full back type so I could see him possibly stealing a goal line TD but Henderson is going to get tons of touches and I like him a lot tonight.

Rex Burkhead- Should be in line for a good amount of work here with Gillislee hurt and James White/Dion Lewis not getting much run. He can do it all out of the backfield and needs a blowup preseason to potentially push Lewis off the roster.

Bishop Sankey- McKinnon and Latavius are not going to play much if at all and that leaves mainly Dalvin Cook and Sankey to soak up all the work. Sankey has pass catching upside (good for DK) and will be a pretty popular play I think. He could also see some kick return action which is just another added bonus. One of if not the top play tonight at RB.

UPDATE 1: Im more bearish on Henderson now, would have the others I listed ranked above and Sankey gets a big boost with McKinnon / Murray ruled out.

Wide Receiver:

Jeff Janis/Geronimo Allison- Your stack partners with Brett Hundley. I think Janis is safer and has crushed in preseasons past but Allison is listed as OUT on the websites so he makes for a nice tournament play even if you aren't using Hundley.

Michael Floyd- He's suspended for the first four games so they're going to have to get him extra work now. He should see tons of snaps and is just going to be flat out better than all these backups on the field. He's one of the top plays tonight and can be used without Keenum as well.

Brandon Coleman- Similar to Floyd. Could see some snaps with Brees and then will stay in with Chase Daniel as well. He is a good NFL WR and is just better than all the 2nd stringers that will be playing and it's the Browns...their 2nd stringers aren't going to be good.

Devin Lucien- An option to stack with your Pats QB. Has been garnering some buzz this preseason as there are reports he has built up a nice rapport with Jimmy G.

UPDATE #1- Lucien left practice yesterday and it sounds like its confirmed he won't play...due to lack of options that moves NE WR Austin Carr into consideration.

Tight End:

Seth Devalve- Should get pretty much all of the work for the Browns as they have two other TE's that are injured. He's a SPARQ freak and absolutely is in play to catch a red zone touchdown.

Nick Boyle- Should see tons of run for the Ravens and saw 60+% of the Ravens snaps in week one of the preseason last year. He can be a safety net for Mallet and I could see him racking up 5 or 6 catches which would be HUGE on Draftkings.

Dwayne Allen- Probably won't play a ton but I could see him getting a quarter and hooking up with Garrappolo in the red zone. A certain Pats TE was famous in the preseason last season and we can maybe go back to the well here.

Defense:

Pick one of Denver, Atlanta or Washington.
